It is getting colder and bike riding is becoming less and less appealing. However,  my enthusiasm for sitting on the couch and thinking about bicycles is never-waning.

Favorite comic writer and fantasy best friend, Kate Beaton, just published a great little sequential which I have accidentally published in full.

Going to her website and reading her other offerings is highly advisable but only if you have an hour or two to spare.

If you have never trusted me before, please, trust me now.

Teddy Girl Tie Time.

Yep. That’s what time it is.

Kind of Like Getting Daps from the Internet.

The one thing that I forgot about the fall is that I have a high tendency to get ill during it.

Which is what I am doing now and have been doing for most of the day. If you count “taking NyQuil at 3pm and sleeping until 8pm” as doing something. Nothing really tastes like sickness quite like the taste produced when drinking orange juice with your mouth all artificially dry-yet-slimy from a dose of decongestants. I will probably be better tomorrow but, right now, I’m using this an excuse to not send out emails, take up the sleeves on my new jacket, or care where my glasses have ended up.

But, despite this somewhat self-induced reprieve into “no effort”, I’d like to share with you the couple places that I have seen With Care get some love from this week. Dig it.

The Ebony Arrow Cocktail Ring was featured on BikBik and RoRo’s “Loving Today”. Reading a little further down on her site, I also came across the passage for Matthew 5:37 “Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’, and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one”. I’m not a scripture quoter nor do I believe in evil (or god, for that matter) but I do believe in speaking plainly and with intent. There are a lot of bad things in the world, you know, -isms and injustice and brutality and all, but few things leave me as cold as flakiness and unfulfilled promises. Not that I am immune to committing either, but how hard is it to stand by your word? And, if you cannot honor your promises, at least be transparent and timely in letting the person on the receiving end know why you must break your word. Ive made jokes that my ideal knuckle tattoos would say “PASS” and “FAIL”. But it’s pretty true. You do. You don’t. GBDFA (or, “God, Bitch! Don’t Fuck Around!” which was my pneumonic device for remembering the bass scale.)

Rachel of Smile and Wave has been wearing one of the Brass Arrow Friendship Necklaces. I wonder who she gave the other one to?

And Beca of Tumbleweed’s Oddshop and Really Fine Glasses Emporium (I added that last part in there) has been rocking her Teenage Lobotomy Pennant Necklace no doubt while making some seriously slick looking, wood veneered sunglasses and working on her new brick’n'mortar shop alongside her gentleman. Their work ethic is seriously making me swell with envy. Or. At least I hope this swelling is from envy.

Unrelateed but, to round it out, here is my favorite image of late:

I can wish, right?

Bow Time!

One thing that I really love seeing at my day job is how many customers send us photos of themselves in their newest I’m Your Present acquisition. We try to post up as many as we can and I think that it is a really fun way to encourage interaction with our, ahem, “client base”. When I am sewing something up, I generally only find myself thinking about it in the immediate sense. It’s so great to see a later photo of it, styled into an outfit and filled with life and it is even better to celebrate how our clothing fits and looks on all sorts of different ladies (and sometimes dudes!)

photo from jesseanneo.blogspot.com

Sadly, I don’t get as many of these kick backs for With Care, but I have gotten some.

First off, check out Miss Jesse and her sweet clip-on bow tie:

On her blog, she adds a corduroy jacket to the outfit- making her look like a babe-ly modern teddy girl. This little tie sat in the shop for long that I had almost forsaken it! But Jesse is really making me reconsider it’s viability. Dang, girl!

Secondly, last December, right before the beginning of my trunk show, my friend Ashley swooped into the store and nearly bought the place out in a moment of inspired Christmas shopping madness! That crazy lady didn’t even wait for the little foil freshness tab to be pulled from the boxed wine!!!

She sent me this spiffy photo of her brother in his new be-anchored bow tie. That light salmon and wild forest green color combo is a bold move, but he is totally pulling it off! And as she commented, “Big smiles. Small dog.” You know I love ‘em.

So, if you are feeling both spring-y and bow-y check out these new offering from our Department of Springtime Clip-on Foppery:

Seasonal allergies are no excuse for sartorial laziness!

Be My Valentine, 2011.

For many years, I have quietly chosen a yearly Valentine. Gender is no deterrent. Mostly, I just look in my heart for someone who has done or continues to do something unrepentantly cool that I find really interesting.

(Actually, upon further research, it turns out that every year I ask Wendy Carlos to be my Valentine only to forget and offer up my undying appreciation of her the following year. I love you, Wendy Carlos.)

Anyhow.

Dear Louis Theroux-

What can I say? I’m not trying to be deliberately obscure just because you are about as popular in the United States as I am. You are, hands down, my favorite documentarian, a word I may have created just for you. This should mean a lot because my boyfriend and I watch a lot of documentaries yet, we always come back to yours. The earlier ones are wonderful, silly, and slightly brash. They make me wonder how I wasted my 20s reading about all this weirdness while you spent your 20s mopping it up. While your newer shows paint you as a very human journalist (a difficult prospect, I think) I still could watch your piece on southwestern alien and UFO enthusiasts every day, expertly miming along to Thor Templar telling us that, “you wouldn’t shoot a ghost with a real gun; you’d shoot a ghost with a ghost gun.” It’s my favorite, sir.

So, Mr. Theroux. Be my Valentine. And please officially release your work stateside… so that we no longer have to steal it. And, if you happen to find this while Googling your own name, please contact me. I have some questions relating to the pictures featured on Rev. Bob Short’s walls.

Your friend in Valentine’s Day and TV land-

Liz Novak.

VALENTINE’S BONUS!

Hear Louis Theroux being interviewed by my 2011 Valentine Runner-Up, Jesse Thorn, on his labor of love and my favorite podcast, The Sound of Young America!

But, truthfully, guys, this is how I will be spending my Valentine’s evening:

All curled up and dreaming of scrambling and then unscrambling human speech.

Gillian Gilbert.

I’ve noticed that a large part of the overwhelming fashion blog world involves the studious study of the “personal style” of other ladies.

I’ve also noticed that these ladies are, infrequently, at all very interesting. Or, as I note to people, “‘Muse’ is not a viable response to ‘Prior Employment’”. But! I have been kind of into searching around through both Got a Girl Crush and Tomboy Style. Both sites feature some good lookers of merit so I’ve decided to add my (so geeky*) suggestion to their ranks.

Ladies? Gents? Can we please give it up for Gillian Gilbert?

You probably have no idea that you know who she is but as the long-time keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist for New Order, her notes probably grace the aural space of your studio or bedroom or car at least once and again (although, we are on a pretty strict everyday schedule at work.)

There’s something so wonderfully understated about her style. She really works the “One-Of-The-Guys”/ “But-I’m-A-Girl” dichotomy. Or maybe I’ve just spent so much time in that space during my life that I’m really sensitive and receptive to it. It’s like you want to be taken seriously or are taken seriously but if you go too far into the femme, you risk becoming a token… and then sexualized… objectified… marginalized… and then it’s pretty much back to the beginning, eh?

I did a little searching, but could never find any evidence of GG talking about her thoughts her place and experiences in music as a lady. I’d love to hear them, if you come across any.

*guys! I am actually listening to an interview with post-punk authority Simon Reynolds RIGHT NOW!!!

Hey 8 Eyes.

Hey! My pal Jenine was on Martha Stewart!

Granted, this happened a few weeks ago, but I wanted to wait on it until I could accompany it with a moment of fleeting vanity. You see, Jenine looked so wearing those safety glasses during her demo that I just had to look into getting a pair to wear for my every day tasks. $4.5o on Etsy and substantially more at Providence Optical- it’s new look time:

Plesant pimple hiding!

You might notice that while both her pair and my pair are wonderfully translucent, the hinges on mine are bolted in with what seems to be a “minus” sign while her’s are much more positive “plus” sign. Turns out that eye wear is indicative of your inner character after all.

Keep it classy, internet.

All My Friends are Busy Being Good at What They Do.

My friend Hannah, as interviewed for Amyblogschow.com! Now that she is a bartrendressextraordinaire!, our cocktail/gossip dates can probably be written off as business research/anthropological study.

Guest Post!

Hey, dudes! Check out the great post that I did over at my long-time lady-friend’s rad food blog! It’s a salsa verde recipe. So, if you are from PVD and are still a little weepy about the Taqueria Pacifica closing, pay attention and ease your sorrows.

Did I mention that her blog has the best name for a foodie blog, hands down? “Foodie Can’t Fail”? Perfection. And you don’t need to know Megan personally to get vibed on her infectious enthusiasm for all things agricultural: just count how many times she uses the word “baller” as an adjective! What she doesn’t bring up is how she is also one of the most gracious, yet hilarious, folks in these here United States. She’s gone to NYU… twice! She sings, dances, and acts. Triple threat! She has better style than any fashion blogger and she keeps it real like it’s her job. Which it might be, considering all that time she spends involved with organic farming.
