Gettin’ It Done.

Good news?

The good news is that the With Care empire embraces Manifest Destiny and has already moved some of its wears to the other coast of this pretty alright nation!

What I mean to say is:

I’m very happy, pleased, and chuffed to announce that With Care-ables will now be sold at the intriguing, exciting, and enthralling Tumbleweeds Odd Shop of San Diego, CA. It is just one of the many things that super-talented duo Beca and Doug are responsible for. Another thing that they are doin’ it well on? This ridiciulously amazing sun glasses series:

which features professionally set wood (actual wood!) veneer of, literally, many stripes. I love glasses and I am particularly enthused about these. Eye glass frames are probably my most expensive and regular financial indulgence (with bicycle gear coming in a close second and gaining) and these have certainly made it onto my “fill with prescription” list. The most difficult part is choosing which pair I like the most.

Speaking of the vision-times, I made my twice-yearly pilgrimage to Providence Optical today. Not only can expect one new and one good-as-new set of glasses waiting for me next week, but I finally brought by the first-ever pair of vintage glasses that I bought. I had purchased them at least 4 years ago and had them filled before realizing that the fit problems were not something that I could easily fit myself. Today, it took all of 2 minutes in their able, detail-oriented hands to bring the ol’ gals back into proper shape. Thanks, Providence Optical!

(the little silver blobs in the corner are two stars where the hinges are bolted in. Not sure if this is typical of the Victory brand eye glasses of the era but, a detail with just the level of whimsy that I can get behind.)

Hey 12 Eyes.

I’m nothing if not up front about my love of eye glasses, right? I mean, have you seen just how many vintage eye glass frames I have favorited on Etsy? An embarrassing amount. When I am sad, I know that I always have fantasy eyeglass shopping to make me smile, even if ever so faintly.

I kind of also love going to the eye doctor. I like it almost as much as going to the dentist… which I like a lot. Either of these examinations will make me feel good about myself, if only because I woke up, did them, and can live with the satisfaction of having gotten something important done. The smug feeling of accomplishment will last all day. Also, unlike the doctor-doctor, the optometrist and the dentist never try to make me feel crushingly bad about myself or my life (a thing that many of my shitty and awful doctor-doctors have done throughout the entirety of my life, no matter how hypocritical)- although the dentist does sometimes rail me about not flossing as much as I should.

Since bitten with the “old glasses” bug, I look for attractive frames often. However, since such a wealth still exist, I had to set some criteria for myself, lest my house or studio become over run into a vintage eye glass grave yard. But even that has left the options too wide. So, I’ve aligned myself to 3 specific brands and designs. Thusly, I am at 2 of each.

I know, the differences are subtle, but indulge me while I yammer on about ‘em, okay?

My first loves, the Art Craft Leading Lady Art-Rims. These lasses are the sister to the classic-of-all-classics, the Clubman Art-Rim which, and I’m only 50% certain about this, might have actually preceded the Ray-Ban Clubmasters. These are at their best when the metal bottoms are cut a little more fully. Too up-swept of a cat’s eye shape and they can become kind of cartoon-y and dated. Fine if you have the personality to back it, but otherwise, you may venture into the territory of “costume”.

This style by Bausch and Lomb is almost exactly similar in dimensions to the Leading Ladies, save for a bite taken out of each corner. Without any rhinestones or geegaws, I love how simple and modern these look. You can’t see here, but the red pair looks to have had a little run-in with a flat iron in the 1960s and still bears some of the scars from that fateful day. However, not enough damage was done to deter me from getting lenses set into them. I’m not a careful person, so it’s best to not give me anything too “new”, anyway.

These guys are also B&L, but safety glass style. After seeing my friend Jenine wearing a pair on the Martha Stewart Show, I was in love. And, of course, being in love means buying every color possible (luckily, only two colors seem to exist. Phew.)

P3, I Love Thee.

Guys, I am kind of falling in love with Christian Chensvold of the blog Ivy-Style.

The other day he posted about “shirt jewelry” and today he is posting a small history of eyeglass frame style that continues to beguile me: the P3.

Bestill my heart, you handsome devils, I was just considering how I wish to invest in a new pair of shades this summer. After some investigating a cheapo pair from a second-hand shop last spring, I have been pretty committed to the P3.

Shopping time?

I’m really liking the Francois Pinton frames but I fear looking a little too “Uncle Jerry Horn” with that highly rounded brow line.

The Classic P3 frame is a little bit more my speed. Ben Silver makes them in tortoise

and grey!

The general Ben Silver P3 is a little thicker in a frame, perfect for a pair of sunglasses.

And they come in blue… So I can match my glasses to my coat to my belt to my purse to many different pairs of shoes. I’m not shillin’ for Ben Silver but its like they know me. Too well. A little too well….

Hey 8 Eyes.

Hey! My pal Jenine was on Martha Stewart!

Granted, this happened a few weeks ago, but I wanted to wait on it until I could accompany it with a moment of fleeting vanity. You see, Jenine looked so wearing those safety glasses during her demo that I just had to look into getting a pair to wear for my every day tasks. $4.5o on Etsy and substantially more at Providence Optical- it’s new look time:

Plesant pimple hiding!

You might notice that while both her pair and my pair are wonderfully translucent, the hinges on mine are bolted in with what seems to be a “minus” sign while her’s are much more positive “plus” sign. Turns out that eye wear is indicative of your inner character after all.

Keep it classy, internet.

Making a Spectacle.

It’s no secret that I hate summer.

But, I guess that it isn’t summer itself. Because vacation is great and the beach is great and ice cream and gardens and the sun setting at 9pm- all great. It’s just… the heat. Any robust hardiness that I have cultivated over the years just evaporates in the heat. And then there’s the humidity. At least it gives my ultra-fine, duck-fluff hair some shape.

So, on those hot, stifling summer days, I can’t help but seek the comfort of my window air conditioner in the bedroom. Sadly, this element isolation leads to social isolation and social isolation leads to the internet. And that leads to… buying eye glasses online.

Last year, Martin, my small dog, ate my prescription sun glasses. Like, not “chewed”.  “ATE”. But- I was able to find these, my dream specs, while I was shopping around for a new pair. I love them. I identify with them. THEY ARE ME. Is my favorite zine HEY! Four eyes! checking this out? Because 2010/2011 Ms. Specs-Appeal is right here, kids!!!!! The perfect blue. The perfect curve. So cool.

But, I know what can happen. Dogs will chew; butts will sit; cars will smash head first into intrepid girl cyclists. My love may be eternal, but my glasses will probably not last forever in this cruel world. So, why not make the most of cowering from the mid-day heat by searching for other pairs of Art Craft browlines on the internet?

And I did.

And, in the end, despite casting my net wide and the inevitable heart break of the amazing black and white, new condition frames that got away at the last second, I was able to net 2 pairs for under 10 bucks each.

Photographing glasses with lenses in them is difficult and photographing yourself with something that isn’t an iMac is a pretty funky process for yours truly. It was hard to make both of us look okay.

Anyhow, these are aluminum Art Crafts, same shape as my spirit glasses, but in a lovely copper finish. And they have these great little flowers etched into the corners and the arms. I like how the bolts for the arms have been integrated into the design.

Pair 2 are not Art Craft at all, but Bausch and Lomb. I’ve never had a pair with this shape which is subtle, but still different than what I am used to. Also, as fab as those cartoonish cat-eyes are, I think this is as outlandish as I will go. I just want to look like a pretty girl, not someone who’s desperate for attention, or- as I say- “given to acts of look-at-me-ism”.

This was more of an experiment. The arms on the glasses are in crap shape, but I have a feeling that snooping and proper questioning of my ever-obliging optometrist will yield some success.

Thank you for entertaining me in this blogging venture. I’m hard at work on WITH CARE business. Spending money with hopes of making money and all that. And making it look uniform, cool, and uniformly cool. We all know that money is cool, but isn’t being cool the coolest cool?

Here’s to a season of not being hot, just around the bend. (hurry! hurry!)
